What is Long Tail Pro
Long Tail Pro is a keyword research tool that has been developed by Spencer Haws, niche website builder and Adsense monetization specialist. Spencer Haws is a full time internet marketer and has been building niche websites for several years. Spencer makes his full time six figure income from his niche websibes and he decided to have Long Tail Pro developed to meet his need for finding profitable keywords, faster and being able to quickly assess the competition in a market.
How does Long Tail Pro Work
Long Tail Pro allows a user to enter multiple seed keywords (unlike many other keyword tools) and then generate potential keywords related to the seed keywords. Literally hundreds and even thousands of keywords can be searched for in minutes. Long Tail Pro has a series of filters which allow you to sift through the masses of keywords to come up with profitable keywords with good search volume and then provides you with the key data required to assess the strength of competition on those keywords.
The power of Long Tail Pro, I believe, lies in several areas.
- Generate thousands of potential keywords from a list of seed keywords
- Assess multiple keywords at a time
- Able to search for exact match domain avialability at the same time
- Able to filter searches based a range of core criteria that you set, so that you can eliminate keywords that don’t stack up, fast. Filters include: Search volume, Title competition, Number fo keywords in the phrase, Average CPC
- Able to view and assess competition quickly and easily with all of the key information required displayed right there on the one screen. Competition data includes the url, page title, whether the keyword phrase is in the site meta description, whether the keyword phrase is in the page title, back links to the domain and to the page, .edu and .gov backlinks and Yahoo Directory and DMOZ directory status.
- In addition to all of this you can even enter your niche sites and keywords to track rank.
Who is Long Tail Pro suited for?
Long Tail Pro is suited for anyone who is interested in building niche websites and has a need to conduct keywords research to assess traffic, competition and potential profitability.
From my experience with Long Tail Pro, I feel the major use of the software is in the niche site ‘conception’ phase – when you are scoping out many ideas to find the right one. This is the situation where I believe Long Tail Pro is really strong.
Long Tail Pro is also built on the Adobe Air platform – which means that the software is pretty light weight (excuse the pun!) and is platform independent – so works on both Windows and Mac.
Web Research Results for Long Tail Pro
At the time of writing this review Long Tail Pro has not long been released. There has been a beta release of the software around for a few months though and many, including myself, have tried it out for finding long tail keywords.
Given that Long Tail Pro has not been around too long yet, there are limited user reports on the internet so far. The Long Tail Pro website lists some user testimonials, including:
“I just wanted to come back to tell you that your Long Tail Pro is terrific….. I saved *hours* of time on keyword research late last week and already have a new site up and running and another one in the works. I’d still be doing the keyword research right now if I were only using MS as I’d been doing. Thanks!…”
Shae B.
“…It’s accelerated my research and I can’t see how I functioned with out it…”
Steve E
“…I like your software A LOT MORE than MNF and Market Samurai!!…”
Adam S
“…Just purchased your Long Tailed Pro software about 2 days ago. Very neat piece of software, what the software does in 10 minutes can literally save me up to 2 hours of work!…”
Darren D
“…You will struggle to find better value for money in the keyword tool research area. Anyone who value their own time in $ as one should will make this money back in no time. Its super fast and efficient compared to Market Samurai and Google adwords tool. MS feels slow & clunky compared to this tool which feels user friendly and fast! The super fast check competition tab is worth the money right there…”
Dannols
“…Your new software is working great. I was able to purchase 3 domains, after 10/15 minutes including my time for analysis. I calculate, these new domains will bring at least $2 a day, = $180 per month (min). I do adsense for a living….. Now, I am “hooked” with your tool!…”

My experiences using Long Tail Pro
Perhaps the best ‘research results’ that I can present are based on my own use of Long Tail Pro.
I find Long Tail Pro immensely useful in the niche site keyword research phase. That phase where you are testing out lots of keywords and trying to identify those which warrant more investigation and thought.
Being able to input several keyword phrases at a time is just a massive time saver and in this area Long Tail Pro definately has it over other major competitors, including Market Samurai. In saying that I still do use Market Samurai at other points in my keyword research and niche building process – but for this conceptual stage of rapid fire keyword testing, Long Tail Pro is now definately my tool of choice.
The competition module presents just what I need to know and it does it superfast! I can really quickly assess and remove from my thoughts niches which are just not going to be viable for me and therefore not waste time doing lengthy and time consuming analysis on keyword phrases that are just not going to pay off.
For those of you who may prefer a more ‘visual medium’ I’ve created a quick walkthrough video to show you around the software. It doesn’t cover all of the features but will certainly give you an idea of just how easy to use and feature rich the software is. Check out the Long Tail Pro Video review below:
My summary of thoughts based on my experience:
- Long Tail Pro saves me heaps of time and is my keyword research tool of choice for finding the right keywords for niche websites.
- The competition analysis area is superfast and presents exactly what I need to know to quickly assess if a niche is worth the effort to pursue.
- Long Tail Pro is easy to use with a nice clean interface and is suitable for both beginners and experienced internet marketers alike.
Advantages
The main advantages of Long Tail Pro, in terms of the functionality are:
- You can generate thousands of potential keywords from a list of seed keywords
- You can save heaps of time by being able to assess multiple keywords at a time
- You can search for exact match domain availability at the same time
- You can filter your searches based on the core criteria you set
- You can quickly and simply assess the competition for a keyword phrase
The other main advantages of Long Tail Pro are:
- It is relatively inexpensive as far as software tools go at under $100.
- The creator of the software, Spencer Haws, appears to be one of the ‘good guys’ in the Internet marketing realm and I have been following his blog for sometime now. I believe that he has really created this product based on a wealth of niche website research knowledge and his aim is to provide a good product.
- It is simple to use and simple to learn with enough filters and options for you to properly assess a niche whilst being uncluttered and free of the masses of options, many of which may be unnecessary distractions, that we see in some other products.
Disadvantages
The main disadvantages that I experienced were that the searches for multiple keywords, particularly if you are including the options for searching for domain names available and Title Competition can take a while. You have to remember though – you are searching multiple keywords at a time – which in itself is a huge time saver. So for me, this wasn’t an issue as I knew I was saving time – I just multi-tasked and did other things when I was waiting for a search to complete.
Less of a disadvantage and more of a feature request, I would have liked to be able to remove keywords from my overall list of returned results so that I could do my analysis of the keywords as I went. There is an export feature, so it could be best to instead export the keywords and make your analysis notes or amendments to the list there. I still think this would be a good feature within the keyword results screen itself.
I have some other little nit-picky user interface things – but I think that could just be me so I won’t worry about them – I design and write specs for software systems for a living, so I’m pretty picky!!
Where to buy Long Tail Pro
Long Tail Pro is available directly from the Long Tail Pro website at www.longtailpro.com.
The software is immediately accessible after you’ve purchased so if you’re raring to go and get started, you won’t have to wait long!
Final Summary
Long Tail Pro is a keyword research tool, developed by full time niche website marketer, Spencer Haws. It provides a great, simple interface and is easy to use. Long Tail Pro allows you to very rapidly assess groups of keywords (yes, more than one at a time!) to find profitable phrases and quickly assess the competition for the phrase. It is very affordable and has saved me tons of time and effort in my keyword research phase of niche website buidling.
I don’t want to sound ‘hypey’ but it’s hard not to when I really do believe that Long Tail Pro is a fantastic tool and can highly recommend it for those how want to find good keywords fast!
I hope you have found this Long Tail Pro review useful and that it assists you in making your decision on whether Long Tail Pro is the right keyword research tool for you.

This article is the second part in our series on How to use Long Tail Pro.
You can view the introductory video here which covers each of the broad steps and you can view part one of the series on brainstorming keywords here.
This particular article will cover part 2 of the process, which is to re-organize and group you seed keywords logically in preparation for using the seed keywords in Long Tail Pro.
Check out our detailed Long Tail Pro Review here
Now this step isn’t mandatory and many people simply employ an ‘ad-hoc’ search method, firing off different keywords in completely unrelated niches. I do think, however, taking a little bit of time to group your keywords logically first, will make your searching and assessing more efficient and organized.
Why is keyword clustering important?
Starting a new site is time consuming to begin with, but then it also takes effort and resources to maintain the site on an ongoing basis. Rather than building a single site for every keyword, it can be a good idea to build one site where you can potentially test out several phrases.
Building a site around several related phrases also adds to the ‘strength’ of your site and gives it potential for expansion into an authority site and also the potential to draw traffic around those multiple phrases.
Using your keyword clusters to build a site also provides better value for your visitors as it is helpful for readers to be able to view content on related topics in one place.
So how do we make our keyword clusters?
Taking your seed keywords and putting them into keyword clusters is relatively easy. You simply go through your seed keyword spreadsheet that you created in part 1 when you were brainstorming seed keywords and you move the keywords around so that you have related topics grouped together.
Expanding our keyword list
Once you’ve grouped your seed keyword list you may find that you can already see potential for other keywords that are related to the ones you already have in your keyword list. Now is the time to slot a few extras in if you think of something along the way!
Ready to get going!
Now we are at the stage where we are ready to move onto Step 3 of the process which is to actually get in there and start our Long Tail Pro keyword searches! Let’s get cracking!

This article is the first part in our series on How to use Long Tail Pro.
You can view the introductory video here which covers each of the broad steps. This particular article will cover part 1 of the process, which is finding seed keywords for Long Tail Pro. Technically, this article isn’t specifically about how to use the software tool itself, however, it’s hard to use Long Tail Pro if you can’t come up with ideas for seed keywords – this is why we start at this point in the process!
Long Tail Pro is, of course, a keyword research software system or software tool designed to help you identify keywords with good traffic and commerical potential and to analyse the key data about each keyword, especially the competing websites. This is a fantastic help to anyone building or managing websites, however, if you are trying to build a website that will be profitable you need to feed the starting keyword phrases into Long Tail Pro in order to begin your analysis.
Firstly, lets look at a couple of things to consider first before we jump into the specifics of finding sources for our seed keywords.

Your Businesss Model
If, on the other hand, you are looking to build a portfolio of smaller niche websites or plan to outsource the content development, then perhaps your interest or knowledge in the topic is not quite as important.
Your experience and time to dedicate to your site
This should guide you in how ‘big’ or ‘competitive’ a product or market you should consider. So targeting the keywords ‘weight loss’ may be a little ambitious for the beginner or those looking to get a site up and ranking quickly, however, big ticket terms such as this should give you a lot of ideas to filter down into some of the ‘sub-niches’ within the broader market.
So where do you get those ‘seed’ keywords?
Sources of seed keywords
Advertisers on big ticket sites
This strategy is about looking up some of the big ‘newspaper’ or ‘magazine’ style sites on the internet, sites like about.com or yahoo news or similar. Look at the adverts that are displayed on the site and notice the products they are advertising and the sorts of markets they are appealing to. For example, you may see some tech gadgets being advertised or weight loss programs and it may trigger an idea in those markets.
Magazines and Digital Magazines
Visiting your local news agent will give you a good insight into the many funny little interests and hobbies out there that
people will buy something for. Look at the magazine themselves for the main topic of interest as a seed keyword idea, but also look at the advertisements (people are paying to advertise, so there may be something to that…!)/ You can checkout digital or online magazines as well at sites like Zinio.com or even just Amazon.
Affiliate Networks
Sometimes you can get your ideas directly from the products you can promote. So taking some time to look through some affiliate networks such as Plimus, Commission Junction, ShareASale or some of the CPA Network sites like Maxbounty or Neverblue.
Online retail and auction sites
Checking out sites like Amazon or Ebay can be a helpful – often these sites will have some sort of popular products area or bestsellers list. This is a great source of ideas.
There is also the ‘daily deals’ type sites where they have a deal each day as well as other smaller deals available – this can give you an indication as to potentially popular products and markets.
Your home
Here’s a little activity you can try at home!
- Take a pen and paper – ok, techno geeks, take your iPad – and stand in your loungeroom looking around at the items you see.
- Write down some potential products and items or ideas. E.g you might see a DVD player, TV, cushions, sporting trophies.
- Write these things down as well as any ideas that come as derivatives from these ideas.
- Now do this for all of the other rooms in your house as well as the outside of your house.
Hobbies and Interests
Ok, now for an oldie but a goodie – make a list of everything that you either:
- Know a lot about
- Would like to know about, OR
- Know someone relatively close to you that knows alot about
When doing this, think about these questions:
- What things do I like doing?
- What things do I like to make?
- What would I consider myself knowledgeable about?
- What things do other people often ask me about?
- If I had time to learn something new, what would it be?
Managing your seed keyword list
Right, so what do I do with all of these keywords?
Well, although many people may manage this process differently, I’ll share what it is that I do to manage the process and why I think it’s important to manage the process.
I have a spreadsheet which is called ‘Seed Keywords’ and all of my potential keywords go into that list.
The point of managing your seed keywords is that if you are planning on building multiple websites then it’s more than likely that brainstorming and analysing seed keywords is something that you will do on many occassions and there’s no point repeating your work over and over again because you’ve forgotten.
Often I’ll have an idea for a seed keyword and have forgotten that I’ve already spent the time to assess the keyword before, so it can be a real timesaver to remind yourself of whether you’ve done the research and what your outcomes were.
We’ll cover off what to do with this list of keywords in the next part of this series, so for now – start brainstorming!

Well I have certainly been putting Long Tail Pro through it’s paces recently!
I’m on a mission to identify 2o keyword phrases to target with my next round of niche sites that I’m going to build.
This has meant I’m becoming more and more proficient at using Long Tail Pro to quickly identify keywords with good traffic, reasonably low competition and good potential profitability.
I love the simplicity of this tool and the efficiency and think it’s really been a great addition to my business.
My workflow generally involves:
- Running through my seed keyword list, grouping similar topics together and then searching on batches of five keywords at a time. Of course this is one of the great advantages of Long Tail Pro – being able to search on multiple keywords at once.
- I filter my list based on traffic and CPC, then I view my results sorted by traffic in descending order. I generally don’t filter on competition as I want to see for myself what the title competition numbers are.
- One by one, I then assess the google top 10 competing websites in the competition analysis view.
- I’ll mark on my seed keyword spreadsheet the terms that I think are a ‘go’. My next step involves some more detailed analysis, usually in Market Samurai to find related keyword phrases and really delve into the competition a little more.
- From here, I identify a primary keyword and several secondary keywords for my new niche site.
So, that’s it in a nutshell! I hope you are finding Long Tail Pro as useful as I am! If you haven’t seen it in action or want to know more then:

For those of you who are unaware Yahoo Site Explorer used to be a great service that offered metrics on backlinks to a website. Some time back now it was announced that Yahoo Site Explorer was to be ‘decommissioned’ and put out to pasture!
So what does that mean for us? It means that many keyword research tools that once relied upon the number of backlinks being reported from Yahoo Site Explorer were now presenting data that was not updated or maintained and therefore, potentially inaccurate. Bear in mind, of course, that most data provided in keyword research tools is inaccurate to some degree anyway, due to the source data being provided to it.
Well, the news is that Yahoo Site Explorer has now been officially closed down and is no longer able to be used.
Thankfully, for Long Tail Pro users, Long Tail Pro has quickly addressed the issue and has switched over the source of backlink data to SEOmoz.org’s Open Site Explorer tool. A new release of Long Tail Pro is now available which switches over to the new backlink source.
Happy keyword researching!

The Numbers Game
I have been reading and following Long Tail Pro creator Spencer Haws for a little while now and the amount and quality of content that he puts out is awesome!
He talks about the niche site business as being a numbers game and this is just so true. Finding long tail keywords, building a website and building backlinks to the site to increase traffic is not difficult. The problem, however, is it’s time consuming and not every phrase you build for will be profitable. Doing great keyword research and competition analysis is extremely important, but even then, it’s not assured that your site will take off and earn money for you. So with limited time available, doing this all yourself is going to a lengthy process to ‘test out’ a phrase – which is essentially what you are doing in the early stages.
If you are going to successful you really need to find a way that enables you to build sites ‘en masse’ so that you can be testing many phrases concurrently and then scaling up the winners.
Scaling up is the hard part. If you want to be successful at building niche sites then you need to be able to build many of them and that means building a team and having well documented processes for them to follow. This is where people come unstuck – me included! Many of us have the knowledge on how to do this but our business is not at a point where we have well documented procedures and tracking methods that enable us to just ‘throw resources’ at a job and that’s a frustrating place to be!
Certainly ‘building the machine’ is what I am currently focused on. In the very short term my own capacity to research, build and market sites is on ‘go slow’ whilst I document the processes and build the management tools to get this really going.
It’s important also, not to let this become harder or bigger than it needs to be. Identify the first things you can outsource, document and hire as soon as possible.
For me, I know I have a tendency to over analyse and try to build the best training and management tools ever – so what am I doing to stop myself from getting stuck in analysis paralysis and management tool building paralysis? Well I’m starting my own mass niche site building project. It’s called the ‘Niche Site 20 Project’ where I am going to build, launch and promote 20 sites at the same time. Very similar to what Spencer Haws has reported on recently over at his Niche Pursuits blog – and hopefully which as much success!!
Niche Site 20 Project
The aims of this project are:
- Build 20 niche sites with a view to these sites earning money
- Document processes that I use throughout the process to research, build, implement and market the sites and store these in a format I can provide to my outsource team
- Hire and try various out tasking services and individual people in an effort to build a team that will enable me to it again
Next Actions:
- Keyword research using Long Tail Pro, of course!
- Writing out my site launch process in a spreadsheet and identify the outsource points and potential software, services or resources required
- Identifying the first priority items on the process list that will require training materials
- Posting a job on odesk to recruit a writer to do article writing, spinning and submissions (as this forms a key part of the back linking process)

Hey! Just a quick note today to let you know of two great new features that has been added to Long Tail Pro with a recent major update.
In addition to improving overall speed and performance, Long Tail Pro now has the ability to look for .com.au domains – great news for those of us located in Australia and looking to target local domains.
The other great new feature is the the ‘Advertiser Competition’. Straight from the horses mouth, (so to speak!):
“Advertiser Competition is a scale between 0 and 100 that represents HOW MANY ADVERTISERS there are for that particular keyword advertising on Google.com.”
Spencer Haws, www.longtailpro.com
Important to note is that this number isn’t telling you how many advertisers there are – it’s a scale representing the competitiveness of the advertising for aparticular phrase. The higher this number is, the more likely that the CPC will be high. It’s basically telling you that there are lots of advertisers bidding on a keyword and so theoretically, if you are using adsense then your income should be higher.
So there you go! New features, enjoy Long Tail Pro!
I’ve put together this quick Long Tail Pro video review to tell you about the top 10 things I love about Long Tail Pro keyword research software.
